Philip Stott: Notable case

R v Zacharias (2012)

In November 2012 at Southwark Crown Court, Philip Stott secured the acquittal of qualified solicitor Richard Zacharias, the senior partner at his own firm in Cheshire, accused of entering into an arrangement facilitating the acquisition of criminal property by another. The allegation against Mr Zacharias was that in 2011 he created a false property transaction in order to defraud Santander of £100,000 in a mortgage advance. The case involved lengthy and detailed cross-examination of the prosecution expert witness, a highly respected conveyancing specialist working with the Law Society, on matters of conveyancing law and practice, and the Solicitors Account Rules.
