Practice: Crime and Regulatory

Karen Robinson prosecutes and defends in cases of serious and organised crime, both as a sole junior and as a led junior. Karen maintains a practice in general crime across the whole criminal spectrum, and has been instructed to prosecute and defend allegations including murder, drugs, armed robbery and human trafficking. Karen has particular experience in the field of police corruption and has prosecuted cases in which it was alleged that public servants disclosed confidential information to journalists or members of the public.

Recently, Karen acted as sole counsel for a defendant charged with offences of rape who was acquitted despite his having a previous conviction for a like offence.

Karen has particular expertise in cases involving complex disclosure issues, PII and 3rd party material. She has experience in the appropriate mechanism for obtaining mutual legal assistance from a foreign judicial authority. She has also dealt with a number of cases where the mental health of the defendant has been in issue.

In the recent past, Karen has lectured to: police officers and prosecution lawyers on the prosecution of controlling prostitution and trafficking offences under the Sexual Offences Act 2003; to local government lawyers on the topics of ‘directed surveillance’ and ‘covert human intelligence sources’; and has provided web-based training in respect of the provisions of the Bribery Act 2010.

Karen is a Grade 3 prosecutor.

Fraud: Civil and Criminal

In recent years, Karen has been instructed by HMRC’s MTIC team to present cases involving factually complex allegations of missing trader intra-community fraud before the First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber) and before the Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery Chamber), often appearing against specialist practitioners in indirect tax law. In these, Karen has been instructed both as a sole junior and as a leading junior.

Karen’s criminal fraud caseload includes large-scale trust fraud, VAT fraud and money laundering. She has been instructed in respect a number of cases investigated by the MPS and City of London economic crime departments. Recently, Karen was instructed to prosecute as a sole junior a four handed trial at the Central Criminal Court involving allegations of credit card fraud with an estimated loss of over £600,000.

Karen has considerable experience of regulatory and disciplinary proceedings. She has presented cases on behalf of the GSCC (including allegations of social workers being under the influence of alcohol on duty and allegations of social workers making inappropriate sexual advances towards vulnerable service users), and presented and defended cases before the NMC. Karen has also defended cases before the Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal (including allegations that a solicitor failed to fulfil an undertaking).

Karen has lectured to lawyers from the Royal College of Nursing on the topic of ‘developments in the law surrounding applications for interim suspension orders’.
