Summary

Mark Aldred specialises in criminal and regulatory work, using the advocacy skills of the criminal courts in disciplinary tribunals.

In the criminal field he has considerable experience in both prosecution and defence, working both as leading and junior counsel. Recently he has been engaged in advising the Attorney General's Office in appellate cases and dealing with other serious cases at the Central Criminal Court, but is now concentrating on his regulatory practice.

In the regulatory field, he specialises in defending professionals, regularly appearing in police disciplinary tribunals and defending solicitors in the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

He has particular expertise in the field of police-related matters, advising forces, sitting as a legal assessor and defending in disciplinary hearings. He has also advised the General Dental Council and appeared in the General Medical Council.

He has particular prominence in the regulatory field for his work in advising Public Authorities in relation to covert monitoring of employees, advising both the Metropolitan Police and the Greater London Authority in this complicated area of law.

As a specialist in Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, Public Interest Immunity and the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act, Mark Aldred is frequently called upon to advise on these and related matters.

Advisory work has included advising the Serious Organised Crime Agency on the extent of legal privilege of solicitors under investigation; advising Cumbria and Surrey Police on RIPA-related matters; advising the Cheshire Constabulary on disclosure; and advising the General Dental Council on non-performance issues arising from an investigation into fraudulent claims.
