On 16 December 2019, Amy Dalla Mura was imprisoned for 28 days by Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot at Westminster Magistrates' Court. Ms Dalla Mura had been convicted following a trial, of harassing Anna Soubry, who until the recent election had been the MP for Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire, for 9 years, firstly as a Conservative and then as a member of the Independent Group for Change (Change UK). Ms Dalla Mura was a pro-Brexit campaigner who had targeted Ms Soubry at a number of events inside and outside the Palace of Westminster for not supporting Brexit. During the trial itself, Ms Dalla Mura, a resident of Hove, took the legally unprecedented step of formally registering as a general election candidate in Broxtowe against Ms Soubry, leading to bail conditions being imposed preventing her from going to the constituency or mentioning Ms Soubry on the internet of the course of the election campaign. In the end, neither the defendant nor the complainant were elected. Philip Stott prosecuted the case instructed by Kate Mulholland of the CPS Special Casework Unit.
