Inquiry reports on Westminster abuse

The public inquiry into child sexual abuse published its Report into allegations of abuse linked to Westminster this month. It considers the institutional responses to allegations of abuse and exploitation involving persons of public prominence, such as MPs Cyril Smith and Peter Morrison, who were associated with Westminster.

One of the themes to arise from the report was that of deference towards politicians and others believed to have some importance in public life. The Inquiry’s findings have been widely reported, including in relation to the resulting resignation of Lord Steel. Nicholas Griffin QC leading Rachna Gokani acted on behalf of the Home Office as lead government department and therefore also looked after the interests of other government departments and witnesses. Zoe Johnson QC represented the Crown Prosecution Service.
