R v C (2018)

Ruth Broadbent successfully appealed to the Crown Court against a conviction for knowingly assisting a child in staying away from the responsible person.

A mother was convicted in the Magistrates' Court for assisting her child when she ran away from social services. Upon appeal, the Defence accepted the Crown's case, but successfully argued the defence of 'reasonable excuse', namely that in assisting her daughter the mother had been protecting the welfare and safety of her child.
