"Sexsomnia" defendant sentenced following successful legal argument by the prosecution. Paul Raudnitz KC instructed for the Crown.

Dean Final has been sentenced to 11 years 8 months, and a 3-year extended licence, for a catalogue of physical, sexual and emotional abuse of two former partners, one of whom he raped on two occasions. Mr Final had claimed a defence of “sexsomnia” – sexual activity whilst asleep. A robust legal argument in response was deployed by the Crown. Following a Court indication that there was insufficient evidence to leave the defence to a jury, Mr Final pleaded guilty. Paul Raudnitz KC led for the Prosecution. He was instructed by Charlotte Caulton-Scott, Head of the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences unit for the East Midlands Crown Prosecution Service.
