GMC v Siddiqui (2015)

Ben Fitzgerald acted on behalf of GMC in the case against Doctor alleged to have carried out multiple unhygienic and substandard circumcisions.

Dr Siddiqui was erased from the Register as a result of misconduct concerning his performance of home circumcisions on young boys in unsafe and unhygienic conditions, in which one child narrowly avoided death as a result of an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic used by the doctor. Most importantly, the case required an acute consciousness of the cultural requirements of the families of the patients and in-depth knowledge of GMC policy and medical evidence on the standards to be applied to circumcisions conducted for cultural reasons, in order to present a cogent case balancing the competing priorities and identifying clearly the doctor’s wrongdoing. The case also involved careful analysis of expert evidence concerning the techniques used by the doctor and incisive cross-examination of the doctor himself.
