Alex Mullen represents teacher's regulator in exam malpractice and 'sweary outburst' case

Alex Mullen of QEB Hollis Whiteman appeared on behalf of the Teaching Regulation Agency in the case of Jennifer Howie, accused of examination malpractice and aggressive and racist behaviour.

Jennifer Howie, who had taught business and IT at Kingsthorpe College in Northampton, was alleged to have made amendments and additions to students' work before it was to be submitted for grading.

One student had found large parts of his work deleted and replaced, and another had noted significant additions to his work.

Investigations included an analysis of audit material obtained from school computer systems which indicated the person responsible was Ms Howie.

The Panel found, in accordance with Alex's submissions, that the teacher's malpractice risked false grades being awarded, and undermined the examination system.

Ms Howie was further alleged to have acted in a threatening way during an aggressive outburst following an internal investigation meeting at the college in March of 2023. She was said to have used racist and discriminatory language about a group of students from Pakistan alongside other offensive and aggressive behaviour.

The Panel, having heard submissions from Alex and Ms Howie's counsel, found all of the allegations proved. They went on to agree that a Prohibition Order was appropriate, and the recommended Order was endorsed by the decision maker on behalf of the Secretary of State.
