Michael David Barrow, of Milford Haven, pleaded guilty to offences relating to the creation and distribution of software, including pirate tv apps and modified Amazon Fire TV devices enabling unauthorised access to pay-TV content over a five-year period between October 2019 and February 2024.
The court heard the operation provided illegal access to services including Sky, BT Sport, TNT Sports and new release movies and tv shows to approximately 1,800 users across the UK. Payments were received via cash and PayPal, with the defendant said to have benefited by around £213,000. The prosecution estimated the wider potential loss to rights holders at approximately £6 million.
Barrow admitted charges relating to the supply and commissioning of apps and electronic data enabling unauthorised access to pay-TV services, as well as the supply of adapted devices for the same purpose.
The magistrates’ court declined jurisdiction due to the seriousness of the offending. Barrow will be sentenced at Swansea Crown Court at a later date.
