Fiona Robertson represented a Metropolitan Police Inspector alleged to have made a series of misogynistic and derogatory comments about women while off duty. The Inspector was drinking with colleagues and a member of the public at a public house when he was alleged to have breached professional standards by making a series of offensive comments about women while he was under the influence of alcohol.
Fiona cross examined the witnesses to identify the serious inconsistencies in the accounts of those present as to the chronology of events, state of intoxication of all parties and nature of the comments. The Panel were also presented with a significant body of positive character evidence about the Inspector showing such comments were anathema to him given his involvement in combating violence against women and girls and his hard work to progress to the rank of Inspector at a young age.
The Panel found the Inspector’s accounts throughout the investigation and police misconduct hearing had been credible, consistent and balanced as against the inconsistencies within the evidence of the Officer who made the allegations. On that basis, the Panel found that all of the allegations were not proved.
