Prosecution offer no evidence after complainant's evidence discredited in fraud and money laundering trial (2016)

QEB Hollis Whiteman member Ben FitzGerald represented a former Chief Operating Officer and fellow member Polly Dyer represented her partner, who were charged with fraud and money laundering respectively. The case concerned the payment of recruitment fees by the COO to her partner, who was providing recruitment work, and the payment of expenses, totaling around £140,000. After the complainant's evidence, which involved lengthy cross-examination, the Judge invited the prosecution to review its case and reconsider whether it wished to proceed with this prosecution. The prosecution decided to offer no evidence and formal verdicts of not guilty were entered in respect of all five counts.
