R v Sale (2020)

Charlotte defended Mr Sale who was adamant that he had not intended to set his block of flats on fire, despite admissions at the scene of "I did it" recorded on Body Worn Video. Mr Sale had a complex mental health history and despite 'lighting the match' that ultimately caused the fire, he had never intended to start a fire.

By the time of the trial the Defendant was deemed unfit to plead. A complicated trial of issue took place. Charlotte conducted a careful cross examination of three police officers, thorough analysis of body worn video footage and then a forensic cross-examination of the fire expert's evidence. The possibility of accident was put to the jury who returned unanimous verdicts of not guilty.
