Solicitors Regulatory Authority v Abeyewardene

Selva Ramasamy QC defended Mrs Abeyewardene, the principal at a firm of solicitors. The SRA brought proceedings based on an investigation by the Legal Services Commission into over £1m of allegedly fraudulent claims by the firm. The case was complicated by the fact that Mrs Abeyewardene had serious adverse health which affected her conduct at the time of the events and which also affected her ability to engage in the proceedings. After a series of hearings and complex and protracted negotiations, an agreed outcome was reached.

Counsel was instructed by Kate Goold of Bindmans

The case was reported in the media by the Law Gazette.
